Batters Box Background:
Cory Sumner and his father Dr. Tim Sumner are co-founders and the principal owners of Batters Box Baseball and Sumner Athletics, LLC. Cory has been a professional baseball instructor and coach since 2002. During the last nine years, he has worked with more than 5,000 young men and women and has quickly become one of the most respected baseball instructors and coaches in the Mid-South.
In fall 2009, The Batters Box launched team programs. Cory Sumner serves as Manager of the Batters Box 18U and 17U Elite Prospects teams as well as director of all Batters Box fall and summer team programs. Under Cory's direction, the Batters Box team program has exploded and has rapidly become the premier elite summer and fall travel program in the Mid-South. In 2011, Cory was able to guide the 18U Batters Box Elite Prospects Summer Team to a top 8 National finish at the ESPN RISE Elite World Series held at Disney's Wide World of Sports in Orlando, FL. Also, Cory helped facilitate 16 Batters Box players and clients go on to play college baseball out of the class of 2011.
Baseball Background:
Cory was a four-year starter at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama where he posted a .320 career batting average. He holds career school records in runs scored, stolen bases, and is 3rd in career hits, 4th in doubles, and 3rd in triples. In addition, Cory holds the single season record for fielding percentage and runs scored at Samford.
Before his time at Samford, Cory spent one year as a red-shirt at Mississippi State University where he was a member of the 1998 College World Series team.
Cory was also a four-year letterman for Coach Phil Clark at Germantown High School. His senior year he earned All-District, All-Metro, and All- Region honors while being named Germantown's Most Outstanding Offensive player in 1997. As a sophomore, he was a member of the undefeated 38-0 State and National Championship team.
Lessons:
Lessons are now available with Cory on weekdays from 3:30 to 10:00 PM. Regular 30 and 45 minute lessons are available and special one hour lessons are available upon request. In order to see the best results, it is important to be consistent with scheduling lessons and consistent with practicing outside of lessons. Hitting a baseball has been proven to be the most difficult thing to do in any sport... for a player to reach his/her full potential, they must put in the time and work hard!
Cory has helped students from age 5 to 25, from T-Ball to Professional, improve their baseball and softball skills and is ready to help you take your game to the next level!
